In Memory – Red Holloway 1927-2012

“Red Holloway died last week, he was nearly 85. Red was a friend and personal favorite, we enjoyed many performances including his appearance at Wilkes with Junior Mance, Earl May and Mickey Roker. He made 2 CD’s for Chiaroscuro as a leader; CR(D)348 The Red Holloway Quartet Live At The 1995 Floating Jazz Festival and CR(D)361 The Red Holloway Quintet “Standing Room Only”; and was a featured sideman on 2 of Clark Terry’s  projects; CR(D)309 Spaceman and CR(D)347  Clark Terry Quintet Top and Bottom.

Red was a natural entertainer, having worked as an emcee and club manager often with his friend Redd Foxx. He always made the audience comfortable and his performances on saxophone were both exciting and sentimental, while his vocals were witty, bluesy and sincere. Everything he did was joyful and musical. Red Holloway has joined a Chiaroscuro honor roll”
