Welcome to Season 2 of the Chiaroscuro Podcast! We’re kicking off the brand new season with a three-part interview with famed session musician Tom Scott. In part 1, he talks about his early exposure to jazz, his beginnings as a musician, involvement in various bands, and his transition into studio work and composing for film and TV. He discusses the challenges and processes involved in scoring for television and reflects on his experiences in the music industry. He also reflects on the enormous influence Chiaroscuro artist Buddy DeFranco had on him as a musician, and we’ll hear the title track from DeFranco’s Chiaroscuro album Wham!.
About Tom Scott
The three-time Grammy Award winner and world renowned saxophonist/woodwind legend takes us on a journey through his half-century of studio, solo recording and live performance master career in music on the highest level.
His is timeless contributions permeate modern music. Carole King’s “Jazzman” is about Tom Scott and that’s him playing the seductive sax throughout the record. When listening to Steely Dan, you’re likely to hear Scott all over albums like AJA and Gaucho. He’s an original member of the Blues Brothers and has recorded with Paul McCartney (“Listen What the Man Said”). His session work ranges from Thelonious Monk and Frank Sinatra to signature work with Joni Mitchell as well as Aerosmith, Blondie, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Quincy Jones.
Scott recorded thirty-five solo projects, including his famed albums like Tom Scott and the L.A. Express and has over 2,000 major recording credits. Whether teaching at NYU’s Jazz Studies Program or producing and hosting his highly regarded Tom Scott’s Podcast Express, Scott’s impact on the world of music remains unchallenged.
